On 22 April, Girls' Brigade groups from the Merseyside District attended an event at Liverpool Town Hall, where they were awarded the Freedom of the City of Liverpool.

Involved in the event were 16th Liverpool, 18th Liverpool, 26th Liverpool, 28th Liverpool n:vestigate and 28th Liverpool n:gage. There were 170 Girls' Brigade guests in total, including representatives from each of the home churches, girls, parents and grandparents.

Liverpool City Council also invited several public figures, including The Right Worshipful, The Lord Mayor of Liverpool, Councillor Barbara Murray and The Lord Lieutenant of Merseyside, Mr Peter Oliver.

Representatives from Girls' Brigade spoke about what the organisation means to them during a showcase, where images from the groups from years gone by up to the present day were displayed. Rachael, who joined Girls' Brigade at age 8 and is now a Leader at 26th Liverpool, said 'The 26th Liverpool group has become like an extended, slightly dysfunctional but very loving family, who have supported me through the highs and lows of life over the years, and helped me to grow from a shy university student to the confident, strong independent women that I am today.'

Members Ruth and Grace from 16th Liverpool said 'The leaders always get us involved with everything and they make sure that we have loads of fun every week. But I also know that I can go to them if I’ve got any problems.' During the showcase, some speakers recalled their favourite memories of being involved in Girls' Brigade. Hannah, a Leader from 26th Liverpool, said 'My biggest highlight was having the opportunity to visit Girls’ Brigade in Kosovo. To complete my Gold Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, I had to undertake a residential section. The 26th Liverpool provided me with the opportunity to be selected from amongst many other Girls’ Brigade members and carried out a great deal of fundraising to make that possible.'
