Commemorating Remembrance Day

news

On 1 November, Girls’ Brigade groups across England and Wales took part in local and national events to commemorate Remembrance Day.

Several members and volunteers had the amazing opportunity of representing Girls’ Brigade at the Cenotaph in London. Among the attendees were Girls’ Brigade Patron Dr Margaret Casely-Hayford CBE, Youth President Eloise Dale, and Vice President Janice Ogilvie.

2nd Leytonstone were very lucky to be a part of the Lady Mayor’s Parade on Saturday 8 November! Tracey, Team Leader, says ‘2nd Leytonstone had a fantastic time on Saturday at the Lady Mayor’s Show. Lots of smiles all round and definitely memories made. Thank you for choosing us to represent GB England & Wales. Walking behind the BB/GB Massed Bands was an added bonus.’

Groups also got involved with local events, services and displays.

1st Leyton helped decorate their church with silhouettes of soldiers and poppies, on which the church congregation wrote the names of those they want to remember. At the Remembrance Sunday Service, young people from Girls’ Brigade, Scouts and the Church read poems and bible readings, and Girls’ Brigade Team Leader Jackie Watson researched and talked about what it was like to live in Leyton during WWI and WWII.

1st Werrington made wreaths for their local remembrance service. 1st Ratby also got crafty and decorated their church with poppies. The group made the 'Lest we forget' letters last year and decided to use them again, then made new poppies with red and green shiny card. Their Team Leader, Alison, drew the poppies and then the girls helped cut them out!

1st Hawkwell offered to help their local community this Remembrance Day. Thousands of knitted poppies were made to cover Southend Pier, so the girls from 1st Hawkwell's n:gage and n:counta volunteered to sew the poppies to string. This helped the girls to practice sewing for their Life Skills Badge in the process!

Girls’ Brigade groups showed support for their community by marching in Remembrance Parades. 2nd Polesworth, 2nd Billericay, 1st Loughborough, 1st Totton and 3rd Hornchurch took part in their local parades.

Well done to all volunteers and members for representing The Girls' Brigade on Remembrance Day.
