A Message for the New Year from GB’s Trustee Board Chair, Emily Brailsford

news

This year I have the honour of preaching at Midnight Mass in my home church in the Peak District and in preparation for writing my sermon, I have been reading and reflecting upon the story of Jesus' birth from Luke Ch.2:1-14.

We are told that Mary and Joseph made their way to Bethlehem, the town of David, because Joseph was from the house of David. They went there to honour their heritage and to respect those who had gone before them.
At Girls Brigade, we have over 130 years of heritage that we can look back upon and be proud of. We have Girls' Brigade Team Leaders with more than 50 years of experience to draw upon.
However, just as Jesus came and made all things new, we need to be looking to our future. If we want to continue to help girls seek, serve and follow Christ, we need to be listening to our girls and young women about what excites them, what they want from GB, what issues concern them, and what are the problems they are facing in today's world.
Next year, we will be introducing our Youth President and two Youth Ambassadors to you. They have exciting ideas about how they would like to help GB grow. They know that there is much to honour about their heritage, much knowledge to be found from listening to their Team Leaders, but I ask our Team Leaders to listen to our girls too. Don't dismiss their ideas, but help them to explore these ideas, and let them try new things out.
We are told in Isaiah Ch.49:19 that 'I am about to do something new; even now it is coming. Do you not see it? Indeed, I will make a way in the wilderness and streams in the desert'. Our volunteers are our heritage; they are there to gently guide our girls, but let the ideas and enthusiasm of our girls be as streams in the desert, let them spring forth and make their own path.
